It’s Ridiculous There’s No Lacrosse in Rio

On August 5, the 2016 summer Olympics kick off in Rio, and we’re eager to watch our favorite athletes represent the USA! But wait, where’s lacrosse on the roster of events?

Lacrosse was an Olympic sport in the 1904 and 1908 summer games. Canada, the USA, and Great Britain competed in men’s lacrosse, and Canada took the gold each year (although Great Britain only competed in the 1904 competition).

Why Isn’t Lacrosse an Olympic Sport Today?

The sport has grown tremendously since the 1908 Olympic games. This growth was acknowledged in 1928, 1932, and 1948 when the sport was held as a demonstration event. However, it never officially entered the Olympic games again. And, only the men’s game was represented, but we know that women lacrosse players would be interested in participating today.

Perhaps with the birth of the Swax Lax lacrosse training ball in January 2015, more children and youth will join the growing lacrosse craze and create a demand across the globe to bring lacrosse back to the Olympic games. Swax Lax are currently sold across in many countries, including Japan, Germany, England, Canada, Scotland, Poland, Ireland, Australia, and the USA!
